Hamilton crashes on second day of private Ferrari Barcelona F1 test

2 min read

The Formula 1 Practice Weekend, which is taking place at the Barcelona circuit this week, understands.

Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton escaped unharmed after an incident occurred as he navigated the third sector of the Barcelona-Catalunya racing circuit around 11am local time.

The seven-time world champion collided with barriers using a revised version of Ferrari's 2023 car - the SF-23 - which suffered damage to its suspension and parts of its aerodynamic structure.

Lewis Hamilton escaped his car that was then returned to the pits, where Ferrari is investigating the cause of the incident.

The test was to begin with Alexander's driving duties in a Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) session, which contributes to the four days and 1,000km totals that each F1 driver can complete in cars over two years old each season, provided their teams run such programs.

Ferrari’s TPC Williams Garage team, operating under the oversight of former F1 driver and deputy team principal Jerome D'Ambrosio, as well as its newly appointed technical director Loic Serra, will replace at least some of Charles Leclerc’s components, including his seat, pedals, and steering wheel, to minimize time lost due to the repairs.

The test is scheduled to run through Thursday and follows both Hamilton and Leclerc driving at Ferrari's home test track at Fiorano last week.

This outing also counts towards each driver's TPC allowance for 2025. Hamilton is reportedly having used only 89 of his 1,000 kilometers on his first drive of the Ferrari F1 car, while Leclerc, a Scuderia stalwart for six seasons, completed 42.

The Barcelona test had been programmed to benefit from the more favorable weather conditions, contrasting with the cold and rainy conditions that had prevailed at Fiorano the previous week.
