The Kenya Meteorological Department has predicted continued rain in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and the South-eastern lowlands from Wednesday, January 29 to Sunday, February 2.
However, a few areas in the southwestern and south rift valley regions are expected to receive rainfall over the entire forecast period.
David Gikungu, Director of the Kenya Meteorological Department, observed that the majority of the Coast, North-eastern, and North-western regions of Kenya are projected to be generally sunny and dry, with the possibility of mild rainfall in certain areas at the start of the forecast period.
What is the local rainfall pattern throughout the different regions?
Highlands to the west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley:
The provinces include: Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.
They are forecast to experience rain, showers, and thunderstorms over several areas, especially in the afternoons of Wednesday and Thursday.
This weekend, Friday and Saturday may experience showers in some areas, with Sunday expecting partly cloudy skies in the morning. Daytime temperatures are forecasted to vary between 86°F and 32°F.
Highlands East of the Rift Valley (including Nairobi County)
Fifteen counties in Kenya constitute the Central Region: Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka, and Nairobi.
Partly cloudy conditions are expected, with scattered showers in some areas, gradually increasing sunshine towards the late morning hours on Friday.
On Wednesday and Thursday, afternoons will see showers and thunderstorms in several locations, whereas light showers will develop at night during the first two days.
The rest of the days will be mostly overcast with temperatures varying between 30°C and 7°C.
North-eastern Kenya
Across Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo counties, the weather will remain clear and sunny throughout the day, although light showers are forecasted to occur later in the afternoon in Isiolo.
Cloudy weather will continue in the area. Temperatures will vary between 38 degrees Celsius and 17 degrees Celsius.
South-eastern Lowlands
Regions encompassing: Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, Taita Taveta, and inland sections of the Tana River.
Residents can expect scattered rainfall during the morning hours, followed by showers and thunderstorms developing in various areas from Wednesday to Friday.
Night time showers are predicted for Wednesday and Thursday, with partly clouded skies anticipated for Friday and Saturday.
The areas of Kajiado and Taita Taveta can expect additional rain showers. Temperatures will vary from 34°C to as low as 12°C.
Coast Region
The counties comprise Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and the coastal parts of the Tana River County.
Expect partly cloudy conditions in the morning, with salty showers predicted for Kwale on Thursday morning.
Showers will affect a few regions from Wednesday to Friday, with some sunshine expected in the afternoons on Saturday and Sunday. Daytime temperatures will vary between 35°C and 22°C.
North-western Kenya
Counties such as Turkana and Samburu will experience a likelihood of rain in the morning, with rainfall and thunderstorms predicted from the afternoon of Wednesday through Friday.
The weekend will feature alternating periods of sunshine and sunbreaks, with nighttime cloud cover persisting throughout the forecast period. Temperature fluctuations will span a range of 11°C to 37°C.
