
Milos Vucevic, Serbia's Prime Minister, has been compelled to step down after facing significant public discontent in the form of widespread protests, resulting in a notable loss of influence for Vladimir Putin in European politics.
The Serbian leader announced his resignation following protests that broke out after a devastating tragedy in November 2024, when a collapsing concrete canopy resulted in the deaths of 15 people.
Although Serbia has denounced Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, it has declined to impose sanctions on Moscow, similarly to Hungary and Slovakia. In Slovakia, Prime Minister Robert Fico is facing political pressure following his meeting with Vladimir Putin in Russia.
Simultaneously, Poland's President Andrzej Duda has urged Europe to dismantle the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines and to put a permanent stop to reliance on Russian gas supplies.
Ukraine has also declined to extend the agreement allowing Russian gas to pass through its territory to supply countries including Hungary, Slovakia, and Austria.
