The player holds the record for the highest number of centuries in Test cricket.
Smith marked the milestone by getting off the mark first with a single off the first ball as Australia crossed 10,000 Test runs together in the series with Smith becoming the 13th Australian player to achieve the feat.
Smith drew a line under what occurred in Sydney after being upstaged by Prasidh Krishna reaching 9,999 Test runs in front of Australia's home crowd.
After reaching the milestone occasion, Smith stood and basked in the applause coming from the Australian fans, who came in large numbers to Galle to support the Baggy Greens. He lifted the bat to all corners of the ground to celebrate the highlight of his distinguished career.
Soon afterwards, he hit the ball back to Prabath Jayasuriya, who lost his chance and allowed the opportunity to slip away. Following a fortunate break his way, Smith seized the opportunity and scored his 35th Test century without looking back.
With yet another Test century to his name, Smith surpassed Gavaskar, Younis, Lara, and Jayawardene, who all had concluded their careers with 34 Test centuries.
In total, Smith ranks seventh among Test centurions and second among Australians, trailing only former captain Ricky Ponting, who amassed 41 centuries throughout his illustrious career.
The player replacing the captain for the series remained undefeated with 104* runs in 188 balls, hitting 10 fours and one six. He formed a significant partnership of 195 runs with Usman Khawaja, who scored 147* runs in 210 balls, including 10 fours and one six.
In 115 Tests, Smith has accumulated 10,103 runs at an average of 56.44, including 35 centuries and 41 fifties, with a highest score of 239.
