Former Premier League players often turn up in unexpected places, especially when they failed to excel during their time in the English top division.
It's always exciting to scan the top scorers' list in a distant country and discover that a legendary Premier League player is dominating the goal-scoring charts with ease.
We have taken a look at five former Premier League players currently playing in the Greek Super League.
Federico Macheda
Do you recall him? Macheda made a striking debut in a team full of Manchester United legends during the 2008-09 season.
He made an immediate impact off the bench in a 3-2 victory over Aston Villa, Cruyff turning a defender and striking the ball with force into the top of the goal for a 93rd-minute winner.
As a measure of how long it had been since he became an instant United hero, Ryan Giggs scored an assist. Macheda made another appearance from the bench the following week, this time scoring the winning goal against Sunderland.
For the first of those goals, the streets won't forget him, but the Premier League soon did, as the Italian ultimately only played 14 times in the competition.
He has had spells at several clubs across Europe, with notable appearances including Doncaster Rovers, Novara, and Ankaragucu.
He is now playing for Asteras Tripoli in the Greek Super League and has scored six goals and provided two assists in 18 games.
Anthony Martial
Martial spent a couple of months without a club after his contract with Manchester United ended after nine years in the summer of 2024.
He was eventually discovered by AEK Athens, who have been enjoying the advantages of having a striker who scored 90 goals during his time as a Red Devil.
Martial has nine goals and two assists for Athens so far this season. He only achieved this level of goal-scoring in one of his last four seasons at United.
The Premier League may have become too fast-paced, but Greece is turning out to be a relatively straightforward challenge.
Erik Lamela
Playing alongside Martial at AEK Athens is former Tottenham player Lamela.
The winger made over 250 appearances for Spurs, earning a spot in the 2018-19 Champions League final. He also received the Puskas Award during his tenure with the team.
Two years after leaving North London, Lamela had won the Europa League with Sevilla, and two years on from that achievement, he is now in Athens, where he has three goals and three assists in the Greek Super League.
It may be difficult to put behind the evenings of drinking Ouzo, as Lamela has as many yellow cards (six) as he has direct goal contributions in the league, along with one red card.
Dejan Lovren
A Premier League and Champions League winner with Liverpool, Lovren has played in three different countries since leaving Anfield.
He initially relocated to Zenit St Petersburg, where he participated in 63 matches over a period of three years, before transferring to Lyon, which was the club where he had spent the majority of his football career prior to joining Liverpool.
In the summer of 2024, Lovren transferred to PAOK Thessaloniki on a free transfer.
The 35-year-old has started seven games, but has also been limited by physical setbacks, and was left out of the Europa League team.
Ally Samatta
A former Premier League player you may not recall unless you're an Aston Villa fan, Mbwana Samatta is the sole Tanzanian to have played in the English top division, although he did so just 14 times and scored only once.
Ollie Watkins was signed by Villa in September 2020, and two weeks later, Samatta was loaned out, a move from which he never recovered.
Samatta played for Fenerbahce, Royal Antwerp, and returned to Genk before joining PAOK Thessaloniki at the start of the 2023-24 season.
He scored two goals in 20 Greek Super League games, and has already surpassed that total this season, with three goals in eight games, each of which came in big wins, as well as a league assist and a goal in the Europa League.
