Asia's most beautiful island considers Bhutan-style daily tax on foreign tourists

Government officials in Bali, considered Asia's most beautiful island, have suggested introducing a daily fee for foreign visitors, inspired by Bhutan's model, in order to attract high-end tourists.

Bali Governor Wayan Koster supported this Bhutan-style approach in 2023 as a way to control the large number of visitors that come to the island each year.

The former Indonesian Minister for Tourism and Creative Economies, Sanidaga Uno, has also discussed introducing a similar model in Bali.

In recent weeks, Balinese Senator Ni Luh Djelantik has shared online content calling on leaders to adopt Bhutan's highly controlled and sustainable tourism model.

Since September 2022, travelers visiting Bhutan have been obligated to pay a daily charge of $100 per person, referred to as the Sustainable Development Fee.

Bali, famous for its breathtaking scenery, untouched beaches, diverse cultural traditions, and historic temples, received 6.3 million foreign tourists last year, exceeding pre-pandemic numbers.

The island is targeting 6.5 million foreign visitors this year.
