Born in 1958 in Spain, near Alicante, Jeanne Mas's early life is not often discussed, but it's known that music was a significant part of her upbringing from a very young age.
In Paris, where she relocated with her family, she received instruction in singing and piano. It was in Italy that the young musician formed her first punk band, with the backing of a music label that recognized her distinctive talent. After a few years in Italy, she returned to France, resolved to make a name for herself and establish herself as a singer with her debut single "Toute première fois".
In 1984, her success was instant. A first album followed shortly thereafter. It included other hits, such as "Johnny Johnny". Two years later, there was new success for her. At the time, she sported a punk look, black hair and pronounced makeup that became her stage identity. "Femmes d'aujourd'hui" (1 million albums sold), notably includes titles that have become cult classics, "En rouge et noir" (whose lyrics she wrote inspired by Stendhal's famous novel) or "L'enfant".
The years that follow are spent taking a break from her career, which she dedicates to her family. Her return to the music scene in the mid-90s is initially cautious, particularly with the release of a new album, which is more subdued and committed than her previous works. The singer, with her distinctive looks, then releases a compilation, "Since the very first time", which quickly earns a gold record. Jeanne Mas regains prominence and her albums follow in succession, with varying degrees of success.
In 2023, she marks 40 years of singing. Following the release of 21 albums, it's now time for her to retire after a long tour that will conclude in the spring of 2025, and then enjoy a peaceful life in her home in Arizona, where she will lead a life far removed from the French music scene:
