Coal-fired generation falls below 50% of Australia's power for first time

Due to the increase in solar radiation.

The Australian Energy Market Operator has announced that the country's dependence on coal has decreased, and has even reached a new record low.

"The increase in solar power production, combined with an all-time low in coal generation, led to coal-fired power plants accounting for less than half of the National Electricity Market's total electricity generation for the first time," said AEMO Executive General Manager - Reform Delivery, Violette Mouchaileh.

Solar output from rooftop and grid-scale solar systems rose by 18% and 9% respectively, resulting in minimum demand records in the National Electricity Market and in Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, and Tasmania.

In Western Australia, coal generation decreased by 19.5% as a result of reduced coal plant availability. This decline was counterbalanced by increases in rooftop solar power (20.3%), gas power (14.4%), and energy from batteries (1,400%).

Western Australia achieved a new high for the percentage of renewable energy in the state's power grid, with an average of 46.4% coming from renewable sources in the latest quarter and a record peak of 85.1%.

The overall renewable energy supply made up 46% of the market's electricity, exceeding 75.6% at one point on November 6, which led to record-low emissions, she stated.
