Donald Trump to revive prison detention for immigrant children

1 min read

The US government is planning to reinstate a policy of detaining migrant families. This policy change may result in a rise in the number of children and teenagers being apprehended.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement is slated to release a request for proposals in the near future, calling on private prison operators to submit bids for contracts to reopen facilities specifically for families.

It is noted by the publication that during the Obama administration and Trump's first term, parents and their children were being held together in US facilities, but Joe Biden's administration ceased this practice in early 2021.

Since Donald Trump's recent return to the White House, the majority of arrests by Immigration and Customs Enforcement have primarily targeted unmarried adult males.

However, this scenario may shift significantly with the potential reopening of family detention facilities.
