NASA rover discovers never seen before textures on Mars

1 min read

NASA's Perseverance rover has found previously unidentified substances in samples of Martian rock.

After departing Jezero Crater, where it landed in February 2021, the rover, which is nicknamed "Percy," has made an unexpected discovery, as reported by its official X (formerly Twitter) account.

A post read: "My 26th sample, known as 'Silver Mountain,' features textures unlike anything we've encountered before. I've placed the rock core in a sealed sample tube so it can be analyzed in labs on Earth at a later time."

NASA anticipates the return of these samples to Earth between 2035 and 2039.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson recently stated: "By pursuing two potential paths forward, we can return Mars samples with significant cost and schedule savings compared to our previous plan. These samples have the potential to revolutionize our understanding of Mars, the universe, and ultimately, human knowledge."
