The Meteorological Department has issued a forecast indicating the lowest probability of rain for February and March.
The official stated that the water supply for the residents of the garrison city was affected by the drought, the rapid population growth, various economic activities, and limited resources.
"The people should use water wisely," Ashraf said as quoted by Dawn.
He stated that a prolonged drought had led to a significant decline in dam and underground water storage levels, causing a substantial imbalance between supply and demand, according to Dawn.
The city needs 68 million gallons of water daily, but only 51 million gallons are being supplied from existing sources, including the Rawal and Khanpur dams, as well as over 490 tube wells.
Government officials stated that groundwater was rapidly decreasing. The water level was at 100 feet in the 1990s, but it has since dropped to 700 feet, according to Dawn.
The city of Karachi previously experienced disruptions in its water supply due to a power outage at the Dhabeji pumping station. This disaster occurred as a result of an explosion during the malfunction, causing two large pipelines to burst, thereby halting water supply to various areas of the city. According to The Express Tribune, one of the affected pipelines was Pipeline No. 5, which had a diameter of 72 inches.
