Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has publicly supported Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja in his upcoming 2027 General Election bid.
Speaking at Bomas of Kenya on Monday, February 10, Raila stated his desire for Nairobi to maintain stability, even as he prepares to take on his new role at the African Union Commission (AUC).
The seasoned politician publicly stated that he hopes Sakaja will continue to lead Nairobi county.
"I want Nairobi to remain stable and for this young man Sakaja to continue leading firmly and doing things correctly," Raila declared as the crowd applauded.
Nairobi's 2027 politics took a new turn when Makadara Member of Parliament George Aladwa called on Sakaja to leave President William Ruto's UDA and join the Orange Democratic Movement.
"Raila, when you visit the African Union, I ask you, Sakaja, our Nairobi governor, to switch from UDA to ODM, and then we move forward together. In our ODM party, there's no room for jealousy." - MP Aladwa.
When he stood up to speak, Sakaja gave the most direct indication yet that he could switch parties before the 2027 General Election.
"What is the evidence of rain, we are going from one bamba to another," Sakaja.
The endorsement of Sakaja's leadership by the former prime minister is a significant setback for Embakasi East lawmaker Babu Owoni and Westland counterpart Tim Wanyonyi.
