Samsung, LG unveil AI-powered home devices to fend off Chinese rivals

1 min read

Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are introducing new products with advanced artificial intelligence and enhanced security features, in an effort to win over consumers with the latest technology as they face growing competition from Chinese TV and appliance manufacturers.

Samsung announced on February 13 that it will introduce a 55-inch OLED TV in South Korea with enhanced AI capabilities. The company has equipped its first TV of the year with AI-driven features aimed at improving user convenience.

The new "AI Smart Home" feature examines household habits, device conditions, and indoor temperature and air quality, then advises actions based on the surrounding environment. If the air quality is poor, it may suggest activating an air purifier. On hot days, it might recommend closing the blinds to enhance air-conditioning efficiency.

A newly added "AI button" on the remote allows users to receive suggestions for related content based on what they are watching or look up information about actors appearing on screen.

Currently, AI-driven capabilities are also being integrated into household appliances. Recently, LG unveiled two air conditioners that can be controlled using voice commands, eliminating the need for a remote control. When a user says, "It's too cold," the AI responds with, "How much would you like to raise the temperature?" and then adjusts the temperature settings accordingly.

LG's massage chair, released in January, utilizes artificial intelligence to analyze a user's preferred massage styles and levels of intensity, offering a customized experience.

Both Samsung and LG are also enhancing their security measures, addressing the rising concerns among South Korean consumers about data breaches and hacking risks linked to Chinese home electronics. LG's security programme, "LG Shield," encrypts user data in real time and continually monitors for external hacking attempts, blocking them as necessary.
