Trump pours cold water on Zelenskyy’s NATO membership

1 min read

US President Donald Trump has accepted Russian President Vladimir Putin's suggestion to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has cautioned that his country's security will remain at risk due to its hostile neighbor.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, he confirmed that Ukraine will not be permitted to join the military alliance, which would have offered vital protection against Moscow.

"They've been saying that for a long time, that Ukraine can't join NATO, and I'm fine with that," the president said.

The US leader also stated that he spoke with Vladimir Putin for over an hour before beginning the negotiations.

Earlier this week, US President Donald Trump suggested that Volodymyr Zelenskyy might not remain Ukraine's president once the conflict subsides.
