Dark Hedges Trees: Nearing the End of Their Natural Lives

2 min read

The renowned trees known as The Dark Hedges, located near Armoy in County Antrim, are reportedly nearing the conclusion of their natural lifespan, according to a heritage trust that plans to assume responsibility for managing them.

The Causeway Coast and Glens Heritage Trust (CCGHT) will assume management responsibilities previously handled by the Dark Hedges Preservation Oversight Group.

The avenue of beech trees gained worldwide recognition when it featured in the American television series Game of Thrones.

The beech trees, which were planted nearly 250 years ago, experienced damage during both Storm Isha and Storm Éowyn This, combined with essential safety maintenance, led to 13 losses since November 2023.

Graham Thompson, CEO of CCGHT, stated that in locations like Italy and southern France, typical beech trees have lifespans of around 250 years.

"Up here in these northern regions, they consider themselves fortunate to reach an age of about 150, perhaps even 200 years," Mr. Thompson stated.

The trees at the Dark Hedges are nearly 250 years old, hence they are unfortunately deteriorating.

What we aim to achieve moving forward is determining how long we can sustain the lifespan of these trees and keep the visitor experience intact.

New trees planted

Nearly 80 trees still stand at the location.

Mr. Thompson stated that a management plan will be implemented for the trees, which includes inspecting each tree annually along with assessments following any storms or similar events.

He mentioned that they have experienced three major storms recently, with two of these causing tree damage. They also removed some trees for safety purposes.

He mentioned that they would additionally plant new trees.

Mr. Thompson stated, "Nothing can compensate for what has been lost, however, as part of this process, it’s essential to act responsibly both as guardians and environmental stewards so that we end up with alternative resources in place."

'Very special place'

Mr. Thompson mentioned that "12 seconds on Game of Thrones" had transformed the location into a major tourist destination.

He mentioned that the increase in tourists has adversely affected the trees, mainly due to vehicles driving on the same road where these trees are located.

Mr. Thompson stated, "Our aim is to collaborate with the Roads Service to ensure that traffic restrictions are improved and strictly implemented. Additionally, we plan to team up with tourism organizations to develop suitable promotional strategies."

Let's collaborate to ensure that this uniquely important location remains so for as long as possible.
