Our space program was conceived and initiated by a forward-thinking leader, Vikram Sarabhai, and advanced by a succession of leaders. To date, we have successfully developed six generations of launch vehicles. The initial launch vehicle was designed under the direction of Satish Dhawan with APJ Abdul Kalam serving as project director in 1979. Since then, including the current launch, a total of 100 launches have been completed, he noted.
Chairman also pointed out that over these launches, they have placed 548 satellites in orbit and a total of 120 tons of payload including 23 tons of 433 overseas satellites.
India has accomplished significant space programs including three Chandrayan missions, the Aditya L-1 mission, the Mars orbit mission, the Space Capsule Recovery Experiment (SRE) mission etc.
