Aden Duale confident Raila Odinga will win AUC seat with landslide: "9 presidents have confirmed"

2 min read

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga's parliamentary bid for African Union Commission (AUC) leader continues to gain momentum, with robust support from Kenya Kwanza leaders.

President-elect William Ruto's team says they expect a landslide victory in the upcoming presidential election in February 2025, according to reports.

Speaking on Citizen TV on Sunday, February 2, Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale reaffirmed Raila's credentials as a Pan-Africanist, reiterating that his campaign has been professionally managed and effectively carried out.

The way President Ruto is campaigning for our candidate clearly indicates the importance of this position for the country. Raila has put in the necessary groundwork; just last week, nine heads of state attended a meeting, and all of them confirmed their support.

He further dismissed the notion that some politicians are unwilling to see Raila vacate the local political scene, citing that his retirement could create instability for certain political careers.

"There are individuals who are exploiting Raila for their own political gain. Without him, several political careers will likely collapse," he added.

How many presidential candidates or party leaders are backing Raila Odinga?

Raila has actively engaged with almost 40 out of 49 eligible countries and has garnered significant endorsements. He has indicated that the former prime minister will need at least 32 votes to secure the position.

“Along with the six nations excluded from voting, Raila has traveled to almost 40 countries. He has gained support from at least 11 Eastern African nations,” he pointed out.

Besides, Duale downplayed fears that the Democratic Republic of Congo's ongoing conflict might affect Raila's chances, pointing out that President Felix Tshisekedi's vote is just one among many that Raila needs to secure.

With the mounting support from African leaders and a carefully orchestrated campaign, Raila's prospects for becoming the AUC chairman seem increasingly promising.
