The co-founder of the cosmetics company Lush advises that individuals who are interested in a scientific career should pursue their genuine interests and passions.
Helen Ambrosen founded the company in 1995 in Poole, Dorset, along with five other co-founders, and the business now has locations in over 50 countries.
She confessed that her knowledge of chemistry was "a bit hit-or-miss" early on in her career and she even accidentally knocked herself out by inhaling chloroform – but she has since created more than 10,000 formulations in her work.

And scientists, don't overlook the significance of manufacturing, as it addresses numerous challenges and concerns. The UK must prioritize manufacturing.
We formerly performed it quite effectively, but no longer do. I believe we require more scientific advancements in manufacturing and stronger dedication from scientists to address this issue.
If she had heeded the guidance of her career counselor, she might not have landed a career with Lush, a company with 104 stores in the UK and Ireland.
"I was encouraged to work in an office, which wasn't a good fit for me at all. So, consider what truly sparks your enthusiasm. Often, those passions are quite different from what your educators might suggest," Ms Ambrosen said.
To have a fulfilling career, you must follow your heart and pursue your passions. You invest a significant amount of time in your work, so it's only fair to create a life that's full of energy, uniqueness, and a sense of accomplishment.
Lush's quality manager, Jet Shears, has been working for the company since 1999 and initially started out part-time by packing bath bombs.
At that point, she was training to become a social worker but made the switch to a full-time career in cosmetics.
"It's an extremely fulfilling task and it's very thrilling for me and the team when the new batch of products arrives," she said.
