regions in 2032.

The likelihood of a collision with the recently-discovered 2024 YR4 asteroid was as high as 3 percent and ranked it number one on the world's asteroid-threat list.

The European Space Agency has since reduced the likelihood to one in 100,000.

NASA has narrowed down the chances of the asteroid posing a threat to Earth to 0.0017 percent, which means it will safely pass our planet in 2032 and poses no risk of impact for the next century.

Paul Chodas, who heads NASA's Center for Near Earth Objects Studies, stated to the Associated Press that there is no possibility that the odds will increase at this point, and that a collision in 2032 has been ruled out.

"That's the outcome we anticipated from the start, although we weren't 100% certain it would occur," he stated in an email.

According to NASA, there remains a 1.7 percent chance that the asteroid could collide with the moon on December 22, 2032, but Chodas expects the odds of this event to decrease.

The world's telescopes will continue to monitor the asteroid as it moves away from Earth, with the Webb Space Telescope scheduled to get a closer look in a month to determine its size. It is anticipated that the asteroid will be out of sight in another month or two.

A newly discovered asteroid, estimated to be between 40 and 90 meters in diameter, is found to pass near our planet approximately every four years.

While this asteroid no longer poses a significant impact hazard to Earth, 2024 YR4 presented a unique opportunity for study, according to NASA.
