Renowned director Martin Scorsese has expressed his appreciation for Romanian cinema, citing films by Radu Jude, Cristian Mungiu, Cristi Puiu, and Corneliu Porumboiu in a recent interview on January 25.
During an interview with Dave Karger at the TCM Classic Film Festival, Scorsese was asked about films that have recently had an impact on him. After mentioning a few Hollywood productions, he stated, "I have a strong appreciation for Romanian films."
Directed by Cristi Puiu.
That one is truly astounding—it juxtaposes politics, film, ethics, and immorality on screen, then violently disassembles them, forcing you to reevaluate and see the world from a fresh perspective.
Jude's films, Scorsese praises, are "fresh and engaging." He continued, citing the Romanian director. "I think he once said, 'Maybe cinema hasn't even begun yet.' And he's correct… he's correct."
Romanian film director Radu Jude shared the interview on his Facebook page, stating that it is a great honor to be mentioned.
He is notably renowned for films that focus on the mafia.
