We can’t find a single pundit who tipped Liverpool to win the 2024-25 title

5 min read

The team is racing towards the Premier League championship – however, not a single sports commentator forecast their victory this season.

The Reds have dominated the division under the leadership of Arne Slot, securing a 16-point advantage over second-placed Arsenal as of early March.

We've reviewed the pre-season forecasts of Britain's most renowned commentators and couldn't find a single one who predicted Liverpool to win the championship.

Gary Neville

"We have to include Arsenal and Manchester City in the top four because everyone is in agreement. I do agree that Manchester United will make it into the top four. However, I am unsure if Liverpool will manage to get into the top four," Neville said.

Carragher then responded: “Do you always think Manchester United will make it, but Liverpool won't? You say that every year without fail, so mark this down.”

Neville replied: "Every season, yeah. I'm often wrong as well. It's quite enjoyable when it gets played back during the season, going to Tottenham - the surprise of the season can be anything.

“Surprise: Liverpool fail to qualify for the top six.”

Jamie Carragher

"I don't think they'll struggle, no," Carragher started on Stick To Football, expecting them to finish third without a serious bid for the top two in the title race.

"I believe Liverpool exceeded expectations last season by staying in the title race for as long as they did, I don't think anyone anticipated that," Carragher acknowledged.

And if Liverpool had a similar kind of season, I'd be very pleased.

"I don't believe Arne Slot would find it impossible to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool," Carragher stated on a separate appearance on Sky Sports.

It was a fantastic period for the club under Klopp, but they fell short of achieving their ultimate goal.

They were extremely successful at one point, holding every trophy under Klopp's management, but it wasn't a situation where they won every year. Rather, they often finished as runners-up to Manchester City.

There is room for improvement for Slot. He can undoubtedly play more effectively and also enhance his defensive skills.

“They will also aim to minimize the number of injuries they experienced last season this time around. There are areas for the new manager to focus on.”

It can be confidently stated that Slot has undoubtedly enhanced Liverpool's performance this year.

Ian Wright

The Arsenal legend made few comments about Liverpool, but he did suggest they would finish in the top four, ahead of Manchester United... alongside Aston Villa, but behind potential title contenders Arsenal and Manchester City.

Michael Owen

Owen predicted to the official Premier League website that Liverpool will finish in second place, with Arsenal winning the title, and Aston Villa and Manchester City placing third and fourth respectively.

I'm ready to assist you. Please provide the text you'd like me to paraphrase.

Roy Keane

“Yes, I believe they will miss out on the top four unless they make a couple of signings in the next few weeks,” said Keane on Stick To Football.

I am not persuaded by them.

Rio Ferdinand

The former Manchester United defender did not discuss his views on Liverpool when sharing his pre-season predictions with TNT Sports, but he did forecast that they would come in third place, trailing behind Arsenal and Manchester City.

Alan Shearer

The Premier League's all-time leading scorer thought Liverpool would end up in third place.

From what I've observed in pre-season, it seems unlikely Slot will seamlessly fit into the team after Jurgen Klopp's impact on the club, but it's intriguing to see the energy he brings to the game.

“Having considered that, they've got the foundation of a truly excellent team already, and with a couple of key signings, I believe Arne Slot will achieve Champions League football.”

Phil McNulty

"Arne Slot is taking on the daunting challenge of succeeding Jurgen Klopp, but he has the advantage of inheriting a highly talented team left behind by his predecessor," wrote McNulty, the BBC's chief sports writer.

“Despite understandable concern from fans about the lack of new signings, this is a remarkably robust Liverpool team.”

They will compete for trophies and place among the top four teams.

Steve Sidwell

A list of 30 BBC pundits were polled to provide their top-four predictions at the start of the season, and Sidwell's prediction might have turned out to be the least accurate.

He had Manchester City, ranked fourth at the moment, winning the title for a fifth consecutive year, with Arsenal and Chelsea in third and fourth place respectively.

United, Manchester, second place.

Pat Nevin

Nevin was not as poorly ranked as Sidwell, and he had Newcastle in third place, a position that many others did not agree with.

Last season's seventh-place finishers have advanced to fifth in the Premier League at present. They are only three points behind third place, so this prediction could very well come true.

Nevin's first, second, and fourth-placed teams were Manchester City, Arsenal, and Chelsea.

Leon Osman

A similar side to Nevin's, but with a unique twist, Osman's selection features the same trio of Arsenal, City, and Newcastle, with the Gunners ranking higher than City, but with Tottenham in fourth place.

Indeed, Ange Postecoglou's underperforming Spurs team, ranked 12th in the league and 31 points behind Liverpool, were initially predicted to surpass them in the race for a top-four position.

He spent almost his entire career with Everton, if we are being fair.

Tim Sherwood

Former Tottenham manager Sherwood placed Spurs in fourth place in his predictions, narrowly losing out on third place to... United. Grim.

His top two clubs were Manchester City and Arsenal, and he stated his "bold prediction" was that Arsenal would place second.

Predicting the team that finished second in the last two seasons to come in second isn't bold.

Perhaps not including Liverpool in your top four predictions would have been a bolder move.
